I’m a scientist and teacher with broad interests in the past, present, and future of Earth as an inhabited world, and the prospects for life beyond. Trained as a geologist and a chemist, my research program is grounded in the perspectives and practices of isotope geochemistry – a branch of geoscience in which careful and precise measurements of isotope ratios are used to learn about the world around us.

Isotope measurements can be used to tackle many different types of problems, bringing me into contact with many areas of knowledge. So, in my 20 years as a professional scientist, I’ve had the fun of working with students and colleagues from diverse fields, including astrobiology, astrophysics, biogeochemistry, biomedicine, chemical oceanography, chemistry, environmental science, geoscience, life sciences, human evolution, planetary science, science education and, most recently, science policy.
